How To Repaint Kitchen Cupboards
Are you looking for a faster and more economical way of redefining the look, style, and feel of your kitchen? Repainting your kitchen cupboards using polyurethane paint is one of the most cost-effective options. You will not just save a lot of time, money, and effort but you will also avoid the hassles and stress that come with refits and renovations.
You have to remember though that DIY methods will not look the same as work done by highly experienced professionals. Doing it wrong will cost you even more than you planned to spend. But if you are confident in your ability, let us guide you through every step of the process so you can transform your kitchen from drab to spectacular.
1. Prepare Your Tools & Materials
Prepare basic tools like screwdrivers, toothbrushes, sponges, microfibre cloths, sandpaper or sanding equipment (coarse, fine, and extra fine grit), vacuum cleaner, putty knife, clamps, and level. Ready materials like liquid dish soap, gentle stain remover, primer and topcoat polyurethane spray paints, filler or putty, masking tape, and plastic sheets.
2. Disassemble Your Kitchen Cupboards
After preparing all your tools and materials, time to disassemble your cupboards. First remove all contents. Then detach all the doors and drawers. If you can detach shelves, go ahead and take them down. Hardware like door hinges and drawer slides can be detached using screwdrivers. You can remove any fasteners by prying them away with a screwdriver.
3. Clean All Cupboard Surfaces
Once disassembly is finished, clean your doors, drawers, shelves, and panels. Wipe away dust using a damp microfibre cloth. Clean the surfaces by dipping your sponge into a mixture of liquid dish soap, gentle stain remover, and hot water. Scrub away stains by using a toothbrush dipped into the same mixture. Then use dry microfibre cloth or sponge wipe everything off.
4. Remove Old Paint By Sanding
After cleaning, you can begin sanding all the different surfaces to remove old paint. Start by using sandpaper or sanding equipment with coarser grits. Remove any residue using a microfibre cloth or vacuum cleaner. Redo the process using finer grits to achieve smoother surfaces. Use extra fine grits to even out imperfections. Make sure to get rid of all remaining residue.
5. Patch All Visible Flaws
Use a filler or putty to patch up flaws like scratches, dents, chips, and small cracks. To ensure long-term durability, make sure to use the right high-quality patching material. Apply the filler or putty evenly into blemishes using your putty knife and let the areas dry. After drying, sand the filled areas with a fine-grit sandpaper to achieve a smoother surface.
6. Mask All Other Areas
Once patching is done, time to mask areas that will not be spray painted. This will protect these areas from paint splatter. Cover areas like counters and walls using your masking tape. Mask all screw holes using the same masking preparation. Lay down plastic sheets to protect counters and floors from paint splatter.
7. Prime All Cupboard Surfaces
After key areas are protected, primer spray painting can begin. Hold up doors and drawers using clamps. You can also lay them on floors with plastic sheets or lean them against masked walls. Start spraying the primer, making sure all surfaces are covered, and let them dry. After drying, smoothen the surfaces by sanding them. You can apply an additional coat of primer of you want.
8. Paint All Cupboard Surfaces
Once primer is applied and sanded, spray the first coat of paint to all cupboard doors, drawers, and panels. Make sure you have even coverage by keeping your spray perpendicular to the surface. Take it slow and steady and let them dry. Once dry, you can apply the second coat of paint and let them dry again. Finally, apply the final coat of paint to achieve the finish you want.
9. Reassemble Your Cupboards
If the paint is dry, time to reassemble your cupboards. Take all masking tape and protective sheets off the different surfaces. Reattach hardware like door hinges and drawer slides. Reattach your doors and drawers to the panels. Ensure correct alignment by using a level.
10. Clean Your Cupboards
After reassembly, wipe off all dust and residue with a microfibre cloth. Wait at least 24 hours before using a wet preparation to clean your kitchen cupboards. This will give your paint time to properly adhere to the surfaces. Clean your cupboards using a mixture of dish soap and water. Wipe off excess moisture using a dry microfibre cloth. Now, your kitchen is transformed.
